UK snippets.
27th February: The following news items are courtesy of Jerry Cookson.

British photographer Darryl Bradford is expecting to make a career move with several drives in Smax Smith's 220 mph Top Alcohol Dragster this year. Following in the wheel tracks of American journalist and NHRA Funny Car racer Whit Bazemore, Bradford is expected to make his licensing runs at Avon Park Raceway in a month's time driving Smith's 2500 bhp "Astral Projection". (Editor's note: there's hope for Tog yet, then!)

Birmingham's Paul Jackson has acquired Gary Angel's VWDRC event-winning eight-second Modified class rear engined dragster. Jackson, who last raced in the Wild Bunch series in 1997 with a Rover V8 powered slingshot dragster, plans to contest the eight-round series for VW Modified dragsters and Beetles at both Avon Park and Santa Pod Raceway. The first round is scheduled for the Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod.

Former British Super Gas Champion Phil Drewitt is no longer on the straight and narrow. Drewitt, whose straight-line career began fifteen years ago with a Morris Minor V8 pick-up, is making a return to the quarter mile ovals with an ex-Malcolm Locke Formula Two stock car.

The Rover V8 Association has confirmed a four-round championship at Avon Park. Organised in conjunction with the Super Series, two classes of Rover V8 will be competing: Street Rover and Super Street Rover for eleven-second cars. Dates are May 1-3; June 19-20; July 30-August 1; and September 25-26. Contact Steve Law on 01895 850031 for more information.

Rob Faulkner is the new owner of Glen Dumont's "Crossfire" Pro Modified Chevy Camaro. Armed with a 500 cubic inch V8, Faulkner's plans include returning the car to the road whilst a few outings in the Custom Car Magazine Street Eliminator can't be ruled out.

Swedish Top Fuel Tour.
23rd February: Swedish Top Fuel fans get an extra bite of the cherry in 1999 with today's announcement of a three-race, four-participant domestic Top Fuel tour. With the late-July FIA round at Mantorp Park, this brings the total number of Top Fuel races in Sweden in 1999 to four.

On the Swedish tour, Peter Lantz, Monica Öberg, Pelle Lindelöw and Jens Nybo will be racing at Piteå, Stockholm and Malmö for a total prize fund of one million Swedish Kronor.

"The major problem for Swedish teams to attract sponsors is that every race but one goes outside Sweden" says the tour's Stefan Boman. "Racing in Sweden is a way to make the Swedish cars more interesting for Swedish sponsors. Hopefully this will bring in sponsors to finance the Swedish Top Fuel Tour as well as the FIA European championship."

Full details will be available very shortly on the official Tour web site, whose address we shall publish as soon as it is announced.

A family affair.
4th February: Hot on the heels of Tuesday's news comes word of another Junior Dragster driver joining this year's competition. 13-year-old Katie Gibbs becomes the latest member of her family to take to the strip, following in the footsteps of her father Terry and brother Craig, who have both raced in Super Gas.

"Katie has always wanted to give Junior Dragsters a go, and she's looking forward to it" says Katie's mother Tina. "She will have a lot of tuition before she gets in the car, and will get a lot of practise beforehand so that she can get used to the car. Terry and I think that is very important".

Katie has also found a sponsor for the car. "Pansonic Air Conditioning have confirmed that they will be on board with Obsession Racing this year" says Tina. "Katie's Junior Dragster will be in the same livery as the Super Gas car".

Junior Dragster certainly looks to be a growth class in its first season in the UK. "We've had a lot of interest from parents who read the piece in Custom Car and from drivers who would like to see their child having a go" says Tina.

If you would like to get involved in Junior Drag Racing then you can find details in Tuesday's news item.
