Swedish Top Fuel Tour Results
11th July: Eurodragster's intrepid reporter Tog has once again reported in from Pittea, this time with the results of the Swedish Top Fuel Tour.
1st Semi Final
Winner : Peter Lantz - 5.15 437kph
Loser : Pelle Lindelow - No Time (Pelle leaving before the tree was activated)
2nd Semi Final
Winner : Monica Oberg - 5.14 448kph
Loser : Kent Persson - 8.02 206kph (smoked the tyres)
The semifinal losers went through to a run off for third place while the final saw Peter Lantz and Monica Oberg square off.
3rd Place Run off
Winner : Pelle Lindelow - 5.42 416kph
Loser : Kent Persson - 7.12 208kph (smoked the tyres)
The Final
Winner : Peter Lantz - 5.18 439kph
Loser : Monica Oberg - 5.18 445kph
As you can see from the times the final was very, very close with Peter getting a slight advantage at the start which converted into a winning margin of just 0.004 of a second at the finish line!
Don't forget there will be a full report on the event once our reporter returns home.
Swedish Top Fuel Tour Qualifying
10th July: Eurodragsters very own Tog is currently attending the first round of the Swedish TopFuel Tour event at Pittea (sorry we didn't warn you he was coming) and in between getting told off for going to far down the guardwall, taking pictures and er, bird spotting he has reported in (using somebody elses mobile phone!!) With the highlights of qualifying.
All four TopFuel cars are qualified, with the exception of Pelle Lindelow who was suffered problems all throughout the day and has been given special dispensation to make a qualifying run tomorrow (Sunday) morning. The standings at present are (all speeds in kph) :
- Peter Lantz - 5.10 at 435kph
- Monica Oberg - 5.32 at 445kph
- Kent Persson - 7.65 at 177kph
- Pelle Lindelow - Still to qualify
Kent Persson's time reflects the luck he has been having throughout qualifying, first he broke the front axle of the dragster when he ran into the back of his tow vehicle when his brakes failed and then later on the team accidentally set their pit canopy on fire whilst warming the car up! Highlight of the day however has been Peter Lantz who carried a 45 degree wheelstand out to the 330 foot markers before gently setting the front end down and running through the top end at 428kph, only to find when he got out the car that he had a flat front tyre! Assuming the Customs people don't catch up with him, Tog will be back on Monday and promises us a full report then.
Close Qualifying at Summer Nats.
10th July: Qualifying positions and times from the Summer Nat's at Alastaro, Finland have been posted on Svensk Dragracing. With the first 8 Super Gassers in the 9.90's and the first 7 Super Comps in the 8.90's (the first 3 all at 8.901!), we think "close" is an understatement.
Swedish Prostreet News.
10th July: The latest edition of Swedish Prostreet News features the Blues Racing Super Prostreet Nova (our aim: 7 sec). Check it out at http://www.dunderklumpenracing.com/prostreetnews/. (But guys, PLEASE tell me what "dunderklumpen" means.)
Five new UK Juniors.
10th July: Just got back from a great day out at the Junior Dragster Party at the Park, at Avon Park Raceway. Over 25 (I lost count after that) youngsters experienced the thrill of driving a Junior Stock dragster for the first time and 5 of them went on to do the observed runs and cockpit orientation tests required to obtain their licences. They include Alvin Adelman, Joe Bond and Holley Glassup. My favourite car has to be the TOT FUEL dragster of Louis (The Clutch) Stewart.
Katie Gibbs jumped into Phil Cook's Modified dragster and immediately ran 9.465 at 67.26mph. She returned to the start line grinning from ear to ear. Dad Terry told me later that her Stock dragster is now for sale. That run makes Katie the fastest girl in the UK, and maybe in Europe (perhaps Suzanne Callin can let us know?). Quickest run of the day (discounting Katie's 652.26mph, which I think may have been a glitch in the timing system) was 8.949 at 71.32mph by Jack Hewitt.
It wasn't all good news, I'm afraid. Paul Lindley-Allen lost an engine ("Know anyone who wants a 100lb paperweight?" were his words) and Jack Hewitt lost what looked suspiciously like a torque converter (OK, so I wouldn't know a torque converter if you hit me over the head with one, but that's the only thing I could think of that might go in the space that was left. I suppose I should have asked. I'll get the hang of this journalism thing one of these days.)
The organisers asked me to pass on their thanks to all the officials and marshalls and the safety and medical crews who all gave their time voluntarily to make the event such a success. Thanks are also due to John and Maureen for feeding and watering dozens of hungry drag racers, mums & dads, marshalls and emergency crews and even the odd webmaster (and they don't come much odder than this one).
What a Hero!
9th July: Take a look at the Summer Nat's preview on the Svensk Dragracing web site for the story of a true drag racing hero.
Cannonball Timing Data.
9th July: The timing data (& a few pics) from The Cannonball is now available at TonyB's web site.

Drive a Junior Dragster.
6th July: OK, kids, you've seen them at the drag strip - now's your chance to drive one yourself at the Junior Dragster Party at the Park this Saturday (July 10th) at Avon Park Raceway. Signing-in is from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. (you MUST sign in if you want to drive one of the cars). First the licensed drivers will show you how it's done, then you'll be given comprehensive instruction, familiarisation with the controls and a safety briefing, followed by a practice stage and a practice launch. Finally, when you're ready, you'll be able to do a full 1/8 mile run (maybe more if time permits).
If Mom and Dad won't let you have a drive, don't worry - there'll be lots more to see and do. British Land Speed Record holder Colin Fallows will be there with his jet dragster and Doug Bond with his 240mph Top Alcohol dragster. Jon Webster hopes to be there with that gorgeous yellow roadster and we're expecting the odd Super Gasser (and some of them are very odd) to drop by, too. It's strictly Juniors only on the strip, so the adults won't be taking up valuable track time.
There'll be a small admission charge, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Downs Syndrome Society, so you'll be helping a very worthy cause as well as having buckets of fun.
Parents won't let you come? Follow this simple two-step plan:
- Say "Dad, can we go to Avon Park?"
- Repeat step 1 until Dad says "Yes, OK. Now shut up!"
Check out the Super Series web site for details of how to get to Avon Park.
Cooky's Vette Latest.
6th July: Following on from a frustrating weekend last weekend at the Cannonball Alan Cook has kindly sent us a brief run down on what happened to the beautiful '63 split window Corvette:
"This weekend well, I need to take a week of to get over it. As anyone that was at the Cannonball is well aware things did not go too well. The intermittent misfire problem which we thought we had resolved returned and although we were unable to solve it we improved the situation by finding several small faults. The car "sounded" better on the first round pass but on closer inspection of the run, from the computer the car ran 7.03 @ 198mph on five cylinders, three were dead!
The next step is to completely strip the car of every piece of electrical
equipment and wire and start again. Tim Garlick has been given the task to rewire the whole system including the replacement of each component i.e. new MSD ignition box, timers, switches, relays, panel, etc, it is the only way I can see of removing an intermittent fault such as this. Ho hum who would want to race Pro Modified"
Whilst this sounds a little downbeat, Cooky was anything but when we spoke to him and he assures us that everything will be back together and ready to Rock'n'Roll at Super Series Round 3 later this month.
Mini Max Attack.
6th July: Get ready for the 1999 British Mini Showdown at Avon Park Raceway, 17 - 18 July. Rumour has it that there will be a 16v Vauxhall powered Mini to challenge the KAD spaceframe Super Saloon Mini of Bill Edwards. Dave Sargent will be there with his full house nitrous injected street legal A-series Mini and there's a full supporting cast of trade stands, club stands and Saturday night entertainment. In addition, there's the Wild Bunch (including Tony Smith's 302ci Ford powered Minivan altered), the ever-popular Run What Ya Brung and flame-belching, ground-shaking runs from the awesome Fireforce Jet Funny Car. The action starts at 10:00am on Saturday. Advance Weekend tickets cost 12.50, Gate Weekend 15, Day 10. 12 - 16's half price. Advance tickets available from the British Mini Club on +44 (0)1384 440060. Web site: http://www.britishminiclub.co.uk/.

Dutch Street Race?
5th July: Bobby Portier (Bobby & Scott's '55 Bel Air) informs us of a possible legal street race in Den Hague on Saturday 28th August. "Ever seen a top alcohol funnycar doing downtown full strip burnouts?" asks Bobby. "No, this is NOT a one-by-one sprint. It's a dragrace in the street." Thanks, Bobby - keep us posted.

not be able to provide the customary Eurodragster updates from the track, but we hope to
be able to bring you brief reports over the weekend.
The latest from Paul Vrind.
5th July: Dutch Super Street racer Paul Vrind writes with the latest
news from Paul Vrind Racing: "At the Atlas Raceday in Ganderkesee I qualified first in the Super Street
Car class. I came through the first round but unfortunetly there was a rainout. The sprint
in Joure was not a big success. During the burnout the purple Pontiac spit out one of its
freeze (water) plugs so the starting area became very wet. The engine was not damaged by
thi, but because I could not repair this on the track the race was finished for me.
Last Sunday I won the sprint in Harlingen organised by the DHRA. The next dragrace where
I will be appearing is the DRAGTEN NATIONALS in Drachten. I am going to update
my website as soon as possible".
Thanks for the news, Paul. Eurodragster web master Tony B will be attending the race
at Drachten; see below if you fancy going along.
Avon Park Wild Bunch Results.
4th July: The rain gods were kinder to us at Avon Park than they were at Santa Pod today, with a couple of light showers which only held up play for 10 minutes or so. The Supercharged Outlaws and Outlaw Anglias were awesome but the star of the show for me was Paul Hensher's luminous yellow Pop called Gas Attack which gave us some great wheelstanding starts and scintillating runs (I think his best was around 8.78). One of the medical crew came over to thank us for the mention in our report on Andy Robinson's crash. True pro that I am not, I forgot to ask his name, but you're very welcome my friend. Although we always hope your skills won't be needed, we all appreciate you being there.
We'll bring you the Nostalgia results as soon as we get confirmation from NSRA (hopefully Monday evening) but meanwhile, here are the Wild Bunch results:
| Wild Bunch |
| 1st | Steve Vaughan |
| 2nd | John Munday |
| 3rd | Chris Hartnell |
| 4th | Clayton Round |
| Best Reaction | John Munday (0.502) |

| Best Radical | Andrew Watson |
| Best Appearing Team | Peter Loveridge |
| Fastest mph | Martin Holgate (137.20) |
| Best Slingshot | John Munday |
| Best Crewperson | Margret Smith |
| Best Newcomer | Team Loveridge |
Race day at the Cannonball.

Nova starts to get Bad.
2nd July: Thanks to Robert Joosten for writing from Holland with news of
his Bad Nova Super Gasser. Testing went well at Ganderkesee until rain stopped play. Robert
plans to test again at this weekend's sprint at Harlingen, and will then compete at Drachten
on 17th-18th July. "Hope to see some Drag friends from England at Drachten", says
Robert. You've been invited, what are you waiting for...
TonyB adds:
We can't let Bad Nova down can we? I've been to Drachten the last two years and it's a great weekend. It promises to be even better this year, with Lex there demonstrating his famous burnouts. I've got 3 spare seats in the car if anyone wants a lift. It'll cost about 19 plus admission. I plan on getting the Friday morning HSS ferry from Harwich and the Monday afternoon ferry back from Hoek van Holland. Bring your own tent and earplugs (not for the racing but because I snore louder than a top fueller). If you're still interested, mail me at webmaster@eurodragster.com.
German web site launches.
2nd July: A new German-language drag racing web site has been launched, "Specially
created to inform German drivers and fans about drag racing in Germany, Europe and all over
the world" says webmaster Peter Calwer. The new web site at
http://www.dragsterracing.de is one of the
best-looking sites you'll see and although not yet completed has made a very promising start:
particularly noticeable amongst the current content is a history of drag racing. "It
is at the moment a little page, but one day maybe we will be a splendid web site like
eurodragster.com" says Peter. Thank you very much for the compliment, Peter.
Santa Pod 1945.
2nd July: The latest update on Trakbyte's
UK Drag Race History includes an aerial photo of RAF Podington (as it then was) in 1945. You
can find it in the Pre 1960 section of the archives. The picture was supplied by
Showtime Racing UK Crew Chief Bob Jarrett who has been looking into the history of the
airfield and the 92nd Bomber Group.
The webmaster of the Trakbyte site is now starting work on a historical photo gallery of drivers
and vehicles, but he has a very limited amount of pictures so far. If you have any historical
pictures of UK Drag Racing then please contact Chris at
trakbyte@aol.com.
Win a T-Shirt.
2nd July: An Autoshops Racing T-Shirt is up for grabs in a competition on the
Swedish Pro Street News magazine.
You've got until July 10th to get your entry in!
Ten Funny Cars headline Cannonball weekend.
1st July: This weekend sees the return of the Cannonball at Santa Pod
Raceway. A total of ten Funny Cars have entered this unique event: the Fuel FCs of John Spuffard,
Gordon Smith and Tony Betts, and the Alcohol FCs of Leif Andreasson, Micke Kågered,
Leif Helander, Lex Joon, Deszoe Krivan, Urs Erbacher and Urs Embacher.
The format of the Cannonball remains the very popular race over a mile: each FC makes three
runs and the two with the quickest aggregate ETs race in the Final.
This weekend also sees the third round of the MSA British Top Alcohol Championship.
Cannonball qualifying runs will not count in the MSA Championship and vice versa, so
Race Director Darren Prentice has scheduled Two Cannonball and three Top Alcohol
qualifying sessions on Saturday in such a way as to provide sufficient turn-round time for
any Alcohol FC teams wishing to participate in both events. Only one of the seven Alcohol
FCs entered this weekend (that of Leif Helander) is sitting out the MSA Championship, so
Funny Car fans are in for a rare treat!
Sunday will see the third round and final of the Cannonball, plus the MSA Championship
eliminations. Special arrangements have been made in the schedule to allow for the possibility
of any of the FCs to be in both Finals.
Joining the FCs in the MSA Championship are the dragsters of Dave Wilson, Rob Turner and
Doug Bond.
Dutch racer Henri Joosten makes a welcome return in the six-car Pro Mod field, joining
Nick Davies, Al Cook, Dave Pollen, Bert Englefield and rookie John Ellis.
The Sportsman classes are well-subscribed, following the welcome trend of large entries so
far this year. The only exception is Super Street car, where there have not been enough entries
to run the class, so Brian Huxley has moved to Pro ET for this weekend. There is a straight
swap in Super Gas and Super Comp: Richard Fulton is to attempt to slow down his rapid
Super Comp pick-up to run in Super Gas, whilst new boy Andy Kirk moves to Super Comp having run in
Super Gas in his debut at Avon Park a couple of weeks ago. Chris Bradley takes a turn at
driving the S & K Racing Super Pro ET dragster; also in Super Pro John Menetrier makes a rare
visit to Santa Pod. David Dony visits from Belgium to run in Sportsman ET.
Six Top Fuel Bikes are entered including those of Holland's Roel Koedam and
France's Eric Teboul. Peter Bossert makes the trip from Switzerland to run in Funny Bike, and
the ten-bike Pro Stock Bike field sees the return of Ceri Visick.
The entry in each class is as follows. Cannonball: 10; MSA Top Alcohol 9; Pro Mod: 6;
Super Comp: 9; Super Gas: 20; Super Pro ET: 7; Pro ET: 15; Sportsman ET: 17;
Custom Car Street Eliminator: 8; Junior Dragster: 3; Jet Funny Car: 1; Top Fuel Bike: 6; Funny Bike: 10;
Pro Stock Bike: 10; Competition Bike: 6; Super Street Bike: 16; 9.90 Bike: 16;
10.90 Bike: 12.
Action starts at 9:00 on both Saturday and Sunday. Qualifying is scheduled to run to 8:30 pm
on Saturday, although there will be a twenty-minute break at 4:25 whilst a minute's silence
and other activities take place at the nearby Memorial Reunion of the 92nd Podington Bomber Group,
who were based at RAF Podington - which is now, of course, Santa Pod Raceway.
Ticket prices and other information are available by clicking on the Next Event button
on Santa Pod's web site, which will also be the site to visit for
live updates if you cannot make the race.
