Santa Pod Raceway web site. Click on the Next Event icon and you will find the entry list at the bottom of the race preview.

We are receving regular updates to the entry list from the Santa Pod Racers Club (thanks to Paula Marshall) and we will update the list on SPR's site as soon as possible after an update arrives.

FAST and APIRA win prize.
31st August: The first ever Eurodragster "Moment Of The Meeting" prize, posted at Super Series 4 this weekend, was awarded to Avon Park's FAST team and APIRA.

You may know that due to a local council ruling, racing is only allowed at Avon Park for six hours - 11:00 am to 5:00 pm - on Sundays and Public Holidays. The best part of two hours were lost from yesterday's six-hour schedule to Dave Wilson's massive oildown and Aidan Kenny's crash, but racing was completed only half an hour late and with only one final outstanding.

For this performance we decided to award the £50 prize to FAST - who are entirely funded from donations - and APIRA; we sincerely wish we could have awarded the same to every single racer for their super-quick turnarounds. Give yourselves a pat on the back, guys.

Eurodragster will be posting another award at the FIA European Finals. Keep an eye on this News page for details.

Next stop: Gainesville.
31st August: News of two great deals on trips to Gainesville: First, any bike rider interested in competing in the AMA/PROSTAR World Finals in November should contact Ian King (ian@dragbikes.com). He, Brian Johnson and Ken Cooper have lots of spare capacity in the container they're hiring for the trip. Ian says they've got a good deal on the container but obviously the more bikes they take the cheaper it will be for everyone.

The second offer is a trip to the GATORNATIONALS in March next year. The price of UK625 includes return flight from Birmingham to Orlando, two nights in a motel in Orlando, four nights in Gainesville, pitside seats at the Gators Saturday and Sunday and two weeks car hire, including CDW. (Price based on four sharing). For more details ring Brian Huxley on +44 (0) 1905 424 913 or see the Top Banana race team at Santa Pod or Avon Park.

Race Day at Super Series 4.
30th August: It's race day here at Avon Park Raceway.

Lantz wins Top Fuel Tour.
30th August: Peter Lantz has become the Swedish Top Fuel Tour Champion with victory in the last TFT date at Thulin Dragway in Malmö, Sweden.

"We ran over the eighth mile because the track is too short for Top Fuellers to run the quarter". "We had a close final against Monica Öberg again, we ran 3.42 in the final to Monica's 3.45, and I had the better reaction time".

Monica was top qualifier with a 3.41; in eliminations, Peter got a bye run in round one when Kent Persson's car shut off after the burnout. Monica also had a bye in round one when Pelle Lindelöw broke in qualifying.

Peter and the crew extrapolated his eighth-mile time in the final to a low 5.11.

We are expecting an announcement from Peter Lantz Motorsports in the next day or two; stay tuned for details.

Svensk at FHRA Finals.
28th August: Our good friends at Svensk Dragracing are dodging the showers at what sounds like a sodden Alastaro. Check out http://www.dragracing.se to see if the weather improves.

Chart their performance.
27th August: The brainiacs at
TSI Timers and the clever one at Eurodragster have got together to produce downloadable Performance Charts showing average and best incremental and quarter-mile performances in a number of classes at Santa Pod Raceway over the last few years.

The charts are in Excel Spreadsheet format and currently cover Top Fuel Dragster, Top Alcohol, Pro Mod, Pro Stock Bike and the non-FIM version of Competition Bike. Click here to go to the Performance Charts, or click on the link under Information in the left-hand column of any Eurodragster page.

AJ without a ride.
27th August: Danielle DePorter's crash at Hockenheim last weekend has left UK Top Fuel pilot Alan Jackson, currently second in the FIA Championship, without a ride for the FIA European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway in September. Alan has been driving the Carbon By Design team's number one car in the FIA tour this season, and it was this car which was involved in the accident.

Alan has rejected the idea of taking over the team's number two car, which has been driven by Robin Read so far this season, to try to take the Championship. "Robin was promised the ride", said Alan, "and we're not going back on our word".

The CBD team plan to step up Robin Read's car at the Finals. "We're missing some key parts", said Alan, "so we'll probably have to use some parts from my Funny Car". US tuner Bill Shultz will again be with the team at the Finals and has already expressed interest in continuing to work with the team next year.

Although his season has been terminated short of a final shot at the Championship, Alan remains upbeat. "It's a shame, because we were really looking forward to the Finals. But Knut (Söderquist, team owner - Ed) is already phoning around to find a new chassis and we'll be back next year".

Busy weekend for race reporterss.
27th August: It's race weekend in Finland, Sweden and the UK and various web sites should be reporting the latest.

Svensk Dragracing and the official web site of the Finnish Hot Rod Association will be reporting from the FHRA Finals at Alastaro, whilst the web site of SHRA Malmö will be reporting from the final rounds of the Nordic Pro Street Cup and the Swedish Top Fuel Tour at Thulin Dragway. Also worth checking out is the official web site of the Top Fuel Tour at http://www.topfueltour.com.

Here in the UK it's Super Series 4 at Avon Park Raceway, which is headlined by the Top Fuel match race between Barry Sheavills and Rico Anthes and the final round of the MSA British Top Alcohol Championship, although the usual huge entry in all classes at the "Home of the Sportsman racer" should generate its own headlines. Eurodragster will be reporting from Avon Park on the Super Series web site (click on Raceday). Gardening - who needs it.

Pro Street News returns.
27th August: The many fans of the on-line Swedish Pro Street News magazine will be pleased to hear that it is back to normal after server problems. The next issue is due on September 4th.

Russ Carpenter returns.
26th August: UK Drag Racing legend Russ Carpenter makes a welcome appearance in his blown-nitro Daimler-powered rail at Super Series 4 at Avon Park Raceway this weekend. Russ was for many years the scourge of Senior Dragster and the classes which led to what is now Super Pro ET. He was the first person to run a Daimler V8 on blown nitro, and ran the car as quick as 7.20 seconds which is not at all bad for a 2.5-litre engine. The car and engine have been completely refettled and Russ will be putting in demonstration passes.

The presence of Top Fuel pilot Rico Anthes at Avon Park this weekend sets up an interesting reunion, since Russ undoubtedly has fond memories of a race against Rico at the World Finals (sic) at Santa Pod Raceway many years ago when Rico was driving his "Wild Ente" Citroen 2CV altered. Rico hit the Christmas Tree and Russ, describing the race at the time, "did the rest of the quarter with a lapful of coloured glass". That's one conversation for which Eurodragster will be listening out whilst we collect quotes and news for our live updates from Super Series 4 this weekend.

For those who remember and may be wondering, we have enquired and have ascertained that Paula will not be returning to see Russ back from his burnouts.

Super Series 4 shifts into gear.
25th August: The entry list for this weekend's Super Series Round 4 at Avon Park has been posted on the
Super Series web site (in the RACE INFO section). Of course the names that immediately catch the eye are those of Messrs Sheavills and Anthes - what a contest that promises to be. It's great to see the return of Lindsay Deuchar in Top Alcohol and Fay Fischer and Martyn Jones in Super Pro. Smax Smith is hoping to have the Astral Projection dragster back in action and Top Fuel riders Chris Hampson, Ian King and Brian Johnson have taken the opportunity to get in some test runs prior to racing in the USA. Junior Dragster goes from strength to strength, with 7 entries (and possibly another on the way, we're told) this weekend. With the Wild Bunch, VW classes, Super Street Rovers and the Supertwins, there should be something for everyone at Avon Park this weekend. (How much are we charging them for this? - Ed)

Nybo's short retirement!
25th August: Jens Nybo is returning to Top Fuel at the FIA European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway in September. He will be driving the US Auto Top Fueler, which is an ex-Nybo car now owned by Swede Johnny Nilsson and Dane Peter Christiansen and which has been driven by Kent Persson in this year's Swedish Top Fuel Tour.

Jens left the sport at the end of last season to race a Peugot 306 in the Danish Touring Car Championship and has done well, but he really misses drag racing: circuit racing was not quite what he expected. "I especially miss the fans, the life in the pits, the racing, and travelling with the good friends in my team" says Jens. "The car I will be driving is the Lantz chassis in which I won the European Top Fuel Championship in 1995 and 1996. The chassis which broke at Santa Pod at last year's Finals is not yet repaired".

Johnny Nilsson remains as Crew Chief, but Jens will be reunited with his Championship-winning crew. "I will bring my crew from the good old days to work for me", he says. "We hope that we can get a good result and show that the old car still can be competitive." Jens is also looking forward to a reunion with his fans. "I'm looking forward to racing in England again. There is always such a good atmosphere and a lot of friendly fans" he says.

As for the future, Jens is already making plans. "I hope that I can be back racing with my old team and a new car soon, hopefully in 2001. Everybody is ready, we just need to work out the last details and, of course, the finance."

Junior record changes hands again.
25th August: Pete Teurlings of Gerd Haberman Racing writes with news of the astounding performance of the team's new Junior Dragster, driven by Marcus Haberman. "We received the new car on Thursday 19th August and took it straight to Hockenheim", says Pete. "On his first pass on Friday Marcus ran 8.36 at 121.72 kmh (about 75 mph - Ed)!". Further runs consistently in the low 8.4s at 121 kmh proved that the first pass was no fluke, and Marcus went on to win Junior Dragster at the Nitro Olympics. "Is there anyone quicker in Junior Dragster?" asks Pete. We at Eurodragster think not, unless anyone out there knows differently...

Dutch riders qualify for World Championship.
24th August: Dutch Supertwin Top Fuel riders
Ton Pels and Rob Van Geffen have taken the first two of four European qualifying places for the American Drag Bike Association's Top Fuel Harley World Championship, which is to take place over three races in Australia in January and February 2000. ADBA Vice President Peter Salmon was at Hockenheim at the weekend to discuss details with the riders.

Monique Pels writes that Anders "Charley" Karling of Sweden and Willem Been of the Netherlands currently fill the remaining two qualifying places, which will be decided at the final round of the FIM European Supertwin Top Fuel Championship at Santa Pod Raceway in September.

More details on the Top Fuel Harley World Championship are available on the ADBA web site at http://www.americandragbike.com/wsdbr.html.

Ivarsson smashes 200 mph.
24th August: Sweden's John Ivarsson followed up his six-second performance at Gardermoen with an astounding run of 209 mph (334 kmh) on his Pro Mod Bike at Hockenheim at the weekend. This terminal speed, recorded on a turbocharged gas-powered bike, makes John by far the fastest non-Top Fuel bike rider in Europe.

Anders Persson writes that John and the team are planning to attend the Pro Star Finals at Gainesville in November, subject to funding. "It will be John's first chance to race where the conditions agree with the bike" says Anders.

More news from John and the team on their web site at http://www.turbojohn.com.

Eurodragster posts Super Series prize.
23rd August: Eurodragster is posting a prize of fifty pounds at this weekend's Super Series race at Avon Park Raceway. The prize is for "Moment of the Meeting" and will be awarded by the Eurodragster team for our favourite occurrence or story over the weekend, whether on-track or pitside: the sole qualifying criterion is that it appeals to the fan in us. This means that every racer is eligible and that the prize will not necessarily go to a class winner.

Eurodragster will be posting a similar prize at the FIA European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway in September.

Hockenheim results.
23rd August: Rico Anthes was victorious in an eventful Europe v USA Top Fuel match race at Hockenheim this weekend. Danielle DePorter, driving one of Knut Soderquist's Top Fuellers, escaped a high-speed crash on Saturday afternoon.

A report, and results with timing data for all classes, are available on the official Nitro Olympics web site at

This year the highlight is the Europe v USA Top Fuel Challenge: event promoter Rico Anthes and reigning FIA European Top Fuel Dragster Champion Barry Sheavills will be taking on Danielle DePorter (in one of Knut Soderquist's TFDs) and Clay Millican (in Donny Holbrook's TFD which has been specially imported). There is a large supporting field of cars and bikes and of course the Saturday night show which, we understand since none of the Eurodragster staff has ever seen it, is never forgotten once experienced.

Results are expected to be posted on the official web site of the Nitro Olympics which you can find at
http://www.dragster.de. The site is well worth a look even before the event starts.

Anyone for Testing?
18th August: UK Pro Modified Racer Al Cook is interested to know if there is anyone else out there that would be interested in a testing session at Santa Pod before the Euro Finals. Al says "I would like to test at some point before European finals and I would like to know if any other pro teams would like to do the same to help share the cost of the track for a day, for example on the Saturday of the weekend prior to the Euro finals (4th September - Ed), This would leave Sunday also, as it is a scheduled run what ya brung day. On the Saturday one lane of the track would be fully prepared to national event standard. I have also approached and have the backing of Kjell Petterson to post this request. Any interested people to contact me by phone (+44) 0151 722 3556 or by E Mailing
COOKYSNR@aol.com".

18th August: The points standings after the Alastaro Night Race round of the Nordic Drag Race Series are now available on the Svensk Dragracing web site. A look at the points tables reveals some very tight contests, most notably in Competition, Stock/Super Stock and Super Comp.

Chris Johnson goes Super Gas.
16th August: UK Pro ET champion Chris Johnson will switch to Super Gas for the next Super Series meeting at Avon Park at the end of August. Chris has been given a cash boost by Shell Oils, via his employers and current sponsors Viking Rover of Southampton. "The original plan for the year was just to do the national series in Pro ET but we are keen to get some air time for our new sponsor, Shell" says Chris.

Chris will not have any electronics on board at this stage and will have to rely on the bolt and his crew.

Plans for next year could involve Super Gas or Super Comp depending on budget.

Linda's whereabouts.
15th August: Grete Rnning writes in response to a number of phone calls and e-mails about the drag racing career of her daughter, Super Comp racer Linda Rnning. "We will be back next year", writes Grete, "Linda had to finish school and wanted to see her friends. You might not believe it, but there are more important things in life than drag racing" (No comment - Ed). We will, however, be seeing Linda at the FIA European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway in September, where she will be working with Rune Fjeld on Barry Sheavills' Top Fuel Dragster.

Grete also tells us that they will be sharing a workshop over the winter with Linda's uncle, Super Comp racer Morten Vestengen, and fellow Super Comp racer Tom Finskud. "We will be helping each other out with problems and having some pep talks", says Grete.

Ceri goes Stateside.
14th August: UK Pro Stock rider Ceri Visick is planning a trip to the USA next month. She will be competing at Atco, September 10-12 and at Gainesville, November 12-14. If things go well, she hopes to do some more racing over there next year. Ceri says "We have teamed up with Dave Schultz and are hiring a complete package from him. We are self-financing all the trips at the moment, but if there is anyone out there who would like to support our efforts in return for advertising then we would be only too pleased to hear from them." Potential sponsors can contact Ceri at
cerivisick@yahoo.com. Eurodragster wishes her the best of luck.

FHRA Finals relocated to Alastaro.
14th August: Press Release from FHRA:

"The FHRA Finals have been relocated from Malmi Airport to Alastaro Circuit. The reason for this is the construction work at Helsinki-Vantaa airport, which means that they have to shut down one of their runways and therefore are not able to handle the small planes. This all affects to the traffic in Malmi and they really cannot afford closing any part of the airport for drag racing.

We had high hopes for the great finals in the Capitol City, but since we are using the best known drag racing strip here in Finland, we can make a good finals also here in Alastaro!

The qualifications starts on Friday 27th August at 17.00 to 21.00 and continues on Saturday at 10.00 to 18.00. The eliminations is on Sunday from 11.00 to 16.30. So as you can see we even get one extra day this way!"

Night Race qualifying.
14th August: On the subject of Alastaro, the Svensk Dragracing web site is now carrying a report and qualifying standings from this weekend's Night Race at Alastaro.

FAST on tour.
14th August: The Fire and Accident Safety Team (FAST) from the UK's Avon Park Raceway will be providing trackside safety at the Nitro Olympics at Hockenheim next weekend.

There will be a crew of ten departing in the early hours of Wednesday morning, travelling down in FAST's Dodge Response vehicle along with a backup car. Richard Warburton of FAST says that progress is expected to be slow due to the amount of equipment being carried!

Richard also says that anyone attending the race should be sure to go and say hello. All of us at Eurodragster wish FAST a safe trip and very much hope that their emergency services will not be needed at the race.

US racers in Hockenheim match.
13th August: It has been announced that Clay Millican and Danielle DePorter will be the USA's representatives in the USA v Europe Top Fuel match race at Hockenheim next weekend, putting an end to long-running rumours centring on Cristen Powell and Mark Oswald. Clay and Danielle will be racing against Barry Sheavills and Rico Anthes. Clay will be driving Donny Holbrook's car which is to be flown to Germany, but differing stories put Danielle DePorter either in the seat of Rico Anthes' spare car or Rune Fjeld's spare.

We understand that these may not be the only Top Fuellers at Hockenheim; as soon as we receive more news we shall pass it on. In the meantime, you can find the Hockenheim web site at
http://www.dragster.de.

Alastaro Night Race preview.
13th August: The Svensk Dragracing web site is carrying a preview of this weekend's night race at Alastaro, plus a new, detailed report on last weekend's events at Gardermoen.

Allen sits out Super Series 4.
13th August: Junior Dragster driver Paul Allen has announced that he has had to withdraw from the next Super Series round at Avon Park at the end of August since his car will not be ready. You may remember reading about (or seeing) the spectacular windowing of the JD's motor at Super Series 3. Paul will be at Avon Park to help out another team, and will be back in competition for the Junior Dragster Shootout at the FIA European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway in September, at which we hope to see a number of Scandinavian and German JD racers.

You can keep in touch with Paul's JD operation on his web site at http://www.eurodragster.com/l-amotorsport.

11th August: The latest Press release from Svensk Dragracing reports upon the latest round of the Nordic Drag Race Series, at Gardermoen last weekend. Click here to read the Press Release.

Meanwhile the latest points standings in the NDRS are available on the Svensk Dragracing web site.

Turn up and race.
10th August: The FIA have issued supplementary regulations which mean that at future races all FIA Classes (Top Fuel, TMD, TMFC and Pro Stock) will run all-qualifying fields. Everyone who puts in a qualifying pass will go into eliminations, regardless of the number of cars qualifying. The fields will be whittled down to a final two with the use of bye runs where necessary. This is common practice in Sportsman racing.

The ruling was in evidence this weekend at Gardermoen where, for example, five cars ran in the first round of TMFC and eleven in the first round of Pro Stock.

Gardermoen results and pictures.
10th August: Full elimination details and pictures from the FIA/NDRS round at Gardermoen are now available on the Svensk Dragracing site at
http://www.dragracing.se. You can also check out the Norsk Dragracing Gardermoen web site at http://www.norskdragracing.com.

Ivarsson into the sixes.
10th August: Congratulations to John Ivarsson for breaking into the sixes on his Suzuki Pro Mod Bike. Anders Persson writes:

Team Ivarsson Drag Racing (Runner-up in the 1998 FIM European Championship Series) broke the six-second barrier with their Suzuki Pro Mod Bike at Gardemoen Dragway (Norway) last weekend.

They raised eyebrows with consistent six-second passes. They started with an unexpected 6.969 and thought: "How are we going to be able to repeat this when we've done 7.24 as the best ET the weekend before at Mantorp Park (Sweden)?". "No problem", said John, and got himself a 6.95 on the next pass. After Saturday qualifying they managed to show the crowds an impressive 6.93 (at 196 mph).

However, during Saturday night preparation of the machine they found metal pieces in the oil pan. After a long discussion they decided to leave the track, instead of not being able to attend at Hockenheim (August 22). Now they will have their qualifying points and repair and adjust the bike even better for next round of the 1999 FIM European Competition Bike Championship Series 1999.

Congratulations also...
10th August: ...to Anders Karling (6.834), Per Bengtsson (6.928) and Rob van Geffen (6.985) for again running into the sixes in FIM Supertwin Top Fuel at Gardermoen...

...to Håkan Nilsson for dipping into the 6.5s in his Pro Mod, a 6.590 in the Final at Gardermoen, although blown by a red light...

...to Top Fuel racer Peter Lantz for following up victory at Piteå with victory at Tullinge. Peter has run the two quickest passes in Europe this season, a 5.10 at Piteå and a 5.05 at Tullinge...

...to Zane Llewellyn of the UK for taking his Super Comp dragster all the way to Mantorp and Gardermoen and holding his own against tough home competition.

A sporting gesture.
10th August: Magnus Cato of Malmgren Racing, whose second Pro Stocker driven by Jacob Ferrer lost to Niclas Andersson in the final at Gardermoen, writes with this very sporting message:

"I'm sorry my predictions didn't come true, but we at Malmgren Racing want to congratulate Totalmek Racing with Niclas Andersson at the wheel for the fabulous racing they have provided us with this year. They certainly deserved the title. All the best and see you guys at the finals at Santa Pod."

Bonin and Lantz victorious
9th August: Our good friends at Svensk Dragracing have now posted a report on the eliminations from Gardemoen which saw Gordie Bonin reinforce his position at the top of the FIA points standings and saw a first victory in FIA competition for Britains Dave Wilson. The full results and ladders will dountless be available very soon, but for now take a look at the
Race Report

Meanwhile Eurodragsters special guest correspondent, Ivan Sansom, has posted his report on eliminations at the second leg of the Swedish Top Fuel Tour. By all accounts it sounds like it was an excellent days racing which eventually saw Peter Lantz victorious. You can find Ivan's report at http://www.eurodragster.com/live/stockholm/. Ivan hopes to post some photos from the event later this week.

New issue of Pro Street magazine.
5th August: A new issue of the on-line

BJ gets busy.
5th August: Not the Top Fuel Bike rider, but UK drag racing fan BJ who writes to tell us that he too has updated his web site with a report and pictures from Super Series 3. You can find BJ's site at http://www.jsjhisted.freeserve.co.uk.

Fire and Rain.
5th August: As the heavens opened on Sunday afternoon we, in common with most spectators at Avon Park, missed Steve Clutterbuck's Supertwin Top Fuel final run, being pre-occupied with running for cover. We are therefore grateful to Sally Pearson for sending us this fascinating account of events:

With Tim Clark nursing a broken chassis following his semi-final on Saturday, this left Steve Clutterbuck to make a solo run for Sunday's final. During pre-run adjustments, Steve and his crew noticed that one of the cylinder heads wasn't sitting quite right. However, knowing he only had to make a solo run, Steve decided to come out, fire up and ride slowly down the track for the win.

With a thunderstorm about to break overhead, Jerry Collier was able to complete his run just as the rain began. Despite lashing rain, quick work by Steve's crew and track officials allowed Steve to line up. Then just as he fired and broke the beam, the cylinder head managed a spectacular blow out. With sheets of nitro flame behind and torrential rain ahead, Steve said afterwards, "It was the most bizarre run of my life."

Deuchar hopes for MSA Final return.

"Special thanks to Bob Meyer and Robert Goodwin at Brooks Rods who have pulled out all the stops to make it happen", says Lindsay.

Allen explains unwanted record.
3rd August: If you were with us whilst we were reporting from Super Series 3 at the weekend, you will have read about the latest record set by Junior Dragster racer Paul Lindley-Allen, when he suffered what we think is the first ever windowing of a Junior Dragster block.

"We have traced the problem back to the re-build (after problems at the Party in the Park - Ed)", explained Paul. "When we bolted the con rod back to the crank it was over-tightened, causing it to be over-stressed in the hot conditions and to completely detonate. The crank went in the process along with all the valve train. The piston was smashed to pieces when the rod was pushed upwards by the crank".

L-A Motorsports has a number of Junior Dragster parts for sale - not parts damaged on Sunday, we hasten to add! - including a complete engine. Contact Paul at l-a.motorsports@which.net for details, or check out our Swap Meet section.

Rick McCann latest.
2nd August: Carla Pittau has sent us the following update on Rick McCann's condition following the frightening accident they suffered a couple of weeks ago:

"I would like to thank everybody (especially Eurodragster for also forwarding all messages to us) who sent get well messages to Rick after our workshop accident. He has walked on crutches all the way to the corridor and back yesterday, and with any luck they may let him out as soon as they are convinced that he can negotiate stairs. I apologise for not responding to any e-mail sent to me - freenet is not co-operating with giving me access to their server. We hope to see you all at the track again soon. Thanks again. Carla"

I'm sure you will all join us here at Eurodragster when we say get well soon and we look forward to seeing you back at the track soon.
