5th August: As the heavens opened on Sunday afternoon we, in common with most spectators at Avon Park, missed Steve Clutterbuck's Supertwin Top Fuel final run, being pre-occupied with running for cover. We are therefore grateful to Sally Pearson for sending us this fascinating account of events:
With Tim Clark nursing a broken chassis following his semi-final on
Saturday, this left Steve Clutterbuck to make a solo run for Sunday's final.
During pre-run adjustments, Steve and his crew noticed that one of the
cylinder heads wasn't sitting quite right. However, knowing he only had to
make a solo run, Steve decided to come out, fire up and ride slowly down the
track for the win.
With a thunderstorm about to break overhead, Jerry Collier was able to
complete his run just as the rain began. Despite lashing rain, quick work
by Steve's crew and track officials allowed Steve to line up. Then just as
he fired and broke the beam, the cylinder head managed a spectacular blow
out. With sheets of nitro flame behind and torrential rain ahead, Steve
said afterwards, "It was the most bizarre run of my life."
